The Best Labour Advice for an Empowered Birth Experience

Whether you’re getting close to your EDD or just planning ahead, let’s talk about labour. Not the sugar-coated version, but the real, practical labour advice that can make a huge difference in your birth experience. Here’s what you really need to know.

Get Some Guidance

Labour is unpredictable, and it’s completely normal to have questions. Consider taking a childbirth class if you haven’t already. Childbirth classes can be a good way to learn about the different stages of labour, pain management techniques, and what to expect at the hospital or birthing center.

They also teach you useful breathing techniques and positions that can help during labour. Some classes even cover how your partner or support person can help you during labour.

Preparing yourself with knowledge can help you feel empowered during labour.

Choose a Birthing Environment that Makes You Feel Calm

If you’re having an uncomplicated pregnancy and the choice of where you give birth is entirely up to you, choose a birthing environment that will make you feel calm, whether it’s at home, a hospital or birthing center.

But wherever you choose to give birth, you can always try to create an atmosphere that makes you feel safe and relaxed. Bring items that bring you comfort, like your favourite pillow, a cozy blanket, essential oils, or calming music.

Even if you’re in a hospital, don’t be afraid to dim the lights or ask for as much privacy as possible. Feeling comfortable in your space can make it easier for you to focus on your body and breathing.

Focus on Staying Relaxed

Staying relaxed during labour can sound easier said than done, but it can make a huge difference in how your labour progresses. Tension can work against your body, making contractions feel more painful.

Try to keep your body loose and relaxed, particularly your jaws, hands, and shoulders. Deep, steady breathing through your nose and out your mouth can be incredibly grounding. Gentle movement, like swaying or rocking can also help keep your body loose and comfortable.

Work with Your Body

Your body knows what it’s doing, so trust that! Move around when you feel like it, rest when you need to, use gravity to your advantage and listen to your instincts. Change positions frequently and make noises that come naturally.

Remember, there’s no “right” way to labour. Your body will guide you if you listen to it.

Pain Relief: It’s not All or Nothing

Listen, there’s no medal for suffering. When it comes to pain relief, there are lots of options. From natural methods like water therapy and massage to medical options like epidurals and nitrous oxide gas.

Choosing pain relief doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re smart enough to use the tools available to you.

Accept Support

Labour is not meant to be a solo journey. Don’t hesitate to lean on the support of those around you, whether it’s your partner, a friend, a doula, or a family member. Their encouragement can be incredibly comforting and can help you stay grounded.

Sometimes, just having someone by your side to hold your hand, offer a cold cloth, or remind you to breathe can make all the difference. Think about it, even superheroes have sidekicks!

Remember to Eat

Last but not least, remember to eat. Labour is hard work and physically exhausting, so you’ll need energy to get through it. While some hospitals restrict food during active labour, light snacks can be a great option in early labour to keep your strength up.

Consider foods that are easy to digest, like bananas, yoghurt, crackers, or smoothies. Staying hydrated is also important, so take small sips of water or electrolyte replacements.

The Bottom Line

Here’s what I really want you to remember:

  • Your experience is unique to You.
  • There’s no “right” way to give birth.
  • Things might not go as expected (and that’s okay!)
  • Take it one contraction at a time.
  • You’re stronger than you think you are.

Remember, the goal isn’t a perfect birth (spoiler: there’s no such thing). The goal is bringing your baby safely into the world in a way that feels right for you.

Trust your instinct, trust your support team and know you’re about to do something amazing. Want to know the best part? Soon this will be a memory, and you’ll be holding your precious baby in your arms, and the journey to get there will have been worth every moment.
